LEO Volunteer programme update!

As you all know, we have relocated to the Marataba Section of the Marakele National Park in April 2016 and now the programme is running at full speed.

We are monMale impala drinking at a damitoring the key species for the National Park Section (lions, white and black rhinos, elephants, buffalos, leopards, spotted and brown hyenas), creating ID kits, preparing monthly reports with the data collected on drive and using the camera traps photos; we manage and check more than 40 camera traps located in specific areas of the park section, we do fence patrols and we actively contributing in anything related to conservation. The black rhino monitoring has also changed meaning we do not follow them on the quad like we used to do. We will conduct more bush walks in the sensible areas, we will do more observation from the mountains and place the camera traps to monitor them in the relevant areas.

We are more actively physically tracking animals following tracks and signs. The National Park Section on which we operate has a great amount of big 5 and general game and it is a real paradise for conservation. In these first month and half of operations, we have had a lot of leopards, lions, elephants, brown and spotted hyenas sightings!

We are helping in animal darting and relocation as well as game capture (from the boma building to the actual capture) – the excess of animals present in the park are sold to other reserves or relocated in other areas of the Marakele National Park (such as Impala, kudu, zebra, blue wildebeest, eland).

LEO’s role on the park section is really important and having being chosen by such a professional team of conservationists and vets who believe in our work is a real honour.

We can happily say this has been a great change and upgrade from the previous location. We are so glad we have moved to this National Park! This underlines the importance and professionalism of our work.

Please do not hesitate to contact us for any additional information regarding our “new programme”.

LEO Africa, a real African experience!

Kind regards,

Sabrina and Koos
